Borage oil (also prettily known as starflower oil) is rich in vitamins and has over 18% GLA (Gamma Linolenic Acid) content - more than Evening Primrose oil. GLA (a type of omega-6 fatty acid) is been proven in a variety of studies to be one of the best essential fatty acids for treating problematic skin, in particular to alleviate inflammation associated with psoriasis, dermatitis, and eczema, as well as infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis (cradle cap). It is a lighter oil, so is excellent to use on its own, or as part of a base blend to treat redness and dry skin.
According to Healthline, "a review of studies using borage oil topically, and other GLA-containing essential oils, found borage oil has both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that can be beneficial for people with atopic dermatitis.
In a separate 2013 review of the effect of borage oil taken by mouth, researchers concluded that borage oil showed no more benefits for people with eczema than placebos, based on an analysis of 19 related studies.
Thus, clinical research is showing more promise with topical borage oil for skin diseases compared with oral versions."
As well as being highly effective as an anti-inflammatory skin oil for dry, inflamed and irritated skin conditions, it is also beautifully moisturising, nourishing and softening, and it helps maintain a healthy skin barrier for all skin types.
